CAD layers can be represented by feature names. For example if you have several features in your map named "road" you can use the Edit|Select Features|By Name to select that all roads; then Edit|Modify Selected Feature(s) can be used to hide, change color, change linetype, or even change name (in the Properties dialog box).

Names are more flexible than layers however. Imagine you have three classes of road: "road_big", "road_med" and "road_sml". The advanced section of the select by name dialog box allows you to select all roads by searching for "road*" or just big roads by searching for "road_big". If you select "road*" features then un-select "road_big" you will only have small or medium roads selected.
