If you find yourself spending more time looking at dialog boxes and changing options than doing productive work you have a bad case of Optionitis. All the modules in Softree/98 software have a File|Save Screen Layout menu item; this allows you to save all the current options in a small file (usually in the \Roadeng directory). These Layout files can be retrieved from the pull down list (combo box) in the toobar (or using File|Retrieve Screen Layout if the file is not in the \Roadeng directory).

For highest productivity and lowest frustration you should have a screen layout for each common design task. For example, in the Survey/Map module, you will have a traverse screen layout for each of the common types of traverses you may enter. Because paper is generally higher resolution than your computer screen you may have another set of screen layouts for printing traverse notes. When creating maps with Survey/Map you may find that there are several standard formats you wish to produce each with their own scale, labels, grids etc.; create a screen layout for each (of course this will work for the Location and Terrain modules as well).

Screen layouts will help you create standard output and will remind you of tools and options that help with a design task (even when you don't work at the computer every day).

Finally, you don't have to know how to create good screen layouts to use them. Let the resident computer nerd set up all the various options and create screen layouts or get him/her to help you. Screen layouts tend to evolve: as you become more familiar with the software you will use different display options for a given task - File|Save Screen Layout saves this kind of modification for the future. Once screen layouts are set up you can store them on a floppy disk for safe keeping or move them from computer to computer.
