Computer Monitors
|
Your computer monitor can often look much better than the way it came from the store. All applications and especially engineering applications work better with higher screen resolution and more colors; a flicker free screen is easier on the eyes. Maximize resolution, color depth and refresh rate. (Note that laptop screens are less configurable). To change resolution and color depth right click on the desktop (behind all application windows), click on the properties item in the popup menu, click on the settings tab. Different versions of Windows handle changes to the settings differently; if there is no facility for testing settings before you commit to them, be aware that you may have to reboot and look for a VGA or safe mode option. If your monitor is 14" or 15" choose 800x600 resolution; if 17" choose 1024x768; if larger try higher. Avoid interlaced resolutions at all costs. Depending on the type of video card and its memory you may or may not be able to increase color depth and resolution. Refresh rate controls depend on the Version of Window and the video card software. If you can find the refresh rate control, 70hz is a good minimum value (60hz has a noticeable flicker). Often the settings and refresh rate controls will be limited if you do not have the correct monitor driver or video card driver installed.
