As of version 3.020 several new dialog box functions have been added to allow you to configure Terrain Tools to accept a external
ASCII coordinate file.
This example illustrates the use of these new functions to import a site plan from a total station data collector file. The file (as shown
below) consists of a sequence number, x,y,z, and code separated by commas.

The following steps read in the coordinate data and connect the matching point codes.
- From menu File - Import select format "User Defined 1" from the list of available selections. Press the Options button to
activate the External Format Specification dialog box as shown below.
- The External Format Specifications dialog allows you to describe the format of external files. Various options are available to
identify, select and format incoming coordinate data. Detailed descriptions of the options in this dialog box are available by
pressing F1 for help. Change the entries in the dialog so they match those shown the screen capture above. This
configuration will read each record of the file as a single point feature. All records will be included and the x,y,z,comment fields
will be in positions 2,3,4 and 5 respectively. The feature ID will be taken from the comment field, duplicates will automatically
be assigned different feature sub-id's.
- We will now assign symbols to the incoming points. Click the Format option. The dialog box shown below will appear. Choose
press Add and choose a blue triangle symbol for CL points. Change the Feature ID to CL???? (Note: this will match codes CL1,
CL2 etc.). Repeat this process to add symbols for RD and RP codes.
- Press OK to return to the External Format Specification dialog box. We will now test our specification to see that it is working
properly. Press the Test button and the External Format Specification Test Dialog box shown below will appear. Select the
ASCII file using the standard file open dialog box. Press the Next button several times, notice how the fields are interpreted.
Press Exit.
- Press OK from the External Format Specification dialog box. The File Import dialog box will now appear. Be sure to select
the Save as Default check box to save the new format for future use. Press OK and enter the file path and name of the file you
wish to import. When the import is complete you should have a file as show below.
